Tandem Skydiving

For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a tandem skydive is unlikely to be forgotten! Many do sponsored tandem jumps for charity or simply just for the thrill of falling at speeds in the order of 120-180 mph.

Courses are normally scheduled on weekends and during British summer Time on public holidays and several other mid week days as detailed on the booking calendars, although other dates will be considered for group bookings

On the day

Checking in takes around 2-3 minutes per participant, accordingly we allow 40 - 70 minutes on a weekend day. Thereafter Documentation, Orientation & Training takes around 45 minutes during which time participants are normally shown a 15 minute video which gives an insight into what is ahead.

On completion of training each instructor can, given good weather, take participants on Tandem Skydives at a rate of 1 participant per each remaining hour of the day. According to demand we may schedule in 1 instructor mid week, and 2 to 5 on weekends.

Participants should set aside a full day to complete their jumps and they, their friends & family should not rule out the possibility that adverse conditions may delay or postpone their jumps so requiring additional attendance at the Centre to jump - poor weather on the first visit is no guarantee of good weather on subsequent visits. Accordingly plenty of patience is required.

A queuing system operates at the Centre with those first to arrive at the head of the queue normally being the first to jump once trained, and conversely those last to arrive at the end of the queue normally being the last to jump. Whilst some participants are being trained opportunities to join the head of the queue (such as the first 2 Tandem slots mid week, or possibly the first 6 on a weekend day) are normally allocated to some who are already trained and are ready to jump, those who perhaps on an earlier date could not jump due to adverse conditions.

Filming

Whilst it is best to indicate a preference to us in advance you can arrange a video of a Tandem Skydive as late as the day of your course for a total cost of £99 (which gets you an edited DVD of your skydive, including pre jump footage, footage during the aircraft flight, footage of the skydive & where possible as a bonus footage of the landing. We sub-contract this service out to Phoenix Video Productions who can be contacted in advance by email at:

phoenixvids@yahoogroups.co.uk

The way the video service works is that you pay ourselves, Skydive Academy Ltd, £44 (card or cash payment only) for the cameraflyer's parachute dropping flight up in the aircraft and you pay Phoenix Video Productions £55 (who do not accept a card payment) for the edited DVD should the video be of an acceptable standard. Should the video be of an unacceptable standard, as judged by ourselves & Phoenix, (of which less than 3% fall into that category and included in that 3% is less than 1% which fail to come out due to camera switch off in free fall, lens misting up etc) we would refund the £44 you paid us to get the cameraflyer in the air, however there would be no refund of the Tandem Fee, or provision by us, Skydive Academy Ltd, of a free 2nd Tandem experience should the video fail to come out.

Criteria

All participants need to satisfy the criteria laid down in BPA Form 115, a fully completed version of which needs to be presented on checking in on the day of the course.

  • Need to be 16 years older and above, 16 & 17 year olds need parental/guardian consent on BPA Form 106
  • Max weight is 15st 7lbs/98kg unseen but we may accept upto 16st 7lbs/105kg after a face to face personal assessment.
  • Once trained participants would normally be expected to demonstrate an arched body position.
  • Participants would normally be expected to be able to maintain a legs raised position for at least a count of 5 seconds (this can be practised by sitting on a stool).

Rescheduling and Cancelation

There is no charge to reschedule 10 days or more in advance of the booked date but within 10 days of the booked date a £35 reschedule fee is charged.

Courses normally go ahead regardless of the weather conditions but should adverse conditions prevent jumping from taking place no fee is charged to reschedule to a new date. Participants are expected to allow the whole day until 8:30pm or dark, whichever the earlier, to make their jumps, those unwilling to do so will be charged £35 to reschedule into a new date.

Once a course is booked no refund can be claimed although prior to the commencement of the course a place may be transferred to another without charge. Once a booked course has commenced places are no longer transferable. Those not attending courses will loose the deposit element of £70 and face an additional reschedule fee of £35 to book a new date.

Tickets

On completion of their initial training participants will be issued with a jump ticket by their Instructor which they should then hand into the Manifest Office (normally on the same day for Tandems or very often the next day for Solo SLs). In the event that jumps are postponed due to adverse conditions jumpers should retrieve their tickets from the Manifest Office in order to be able to present them on their next visit. Should jumpers thereafter be unable to present their ticket on a future date (be that through loss, damage or forgetfulness) a 10 pound charge will be levied for a replacement ticket.

We operate a ticket in (jumper ready to jump) ticket out (jumper not ready to jump) system. Jumpers leaving tickets in at the Manifest Office when they have withdrawn from jumping that day leads to confusion and delays, accordingly any jumper who leaves a ticket in when they have not jumped that day will face a 10 pound charge to retrieve their ticket on a subsequent date.

Training Currency

Should participants exceed a period of 3 months since last attending to jump, or should participants demonstrate a major lack of competence at any stage after completing their initial training, they will need to retake the full training syllabus again, normally by booking onto and attending another scheduled course with suitable availability. Should the latter be within 3 months of participants last attending the Centre but also within 12 months of their initial training no charge will be raised for such retraining. If over 3 months since participants last attended a fee of £50 will be charged for a full retrain. Any participants exceeding a period of 12 months since their initial training will need to attend another full course at the full course fee in place at that time.

Solo Parachuting

A static line parachute jump can be done just as a one off experience or as part of a course to progress on to freefall and skydiving. If you have time but want to spread the cost of learning to skydive over a longer period of time then the SL course may be just for you. It is a good way of experiencing parachuting if it is something that you might like to carry on with without the expense of an Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) Course.

A single static line jump can also be done as a sponsored event for charity. A list of organisations promoting this can be obtained from the Centre by emailing office@skydiveacademy.org.uk.

With the SL method the parachute is deployed by a static line secured to a strong point within the aircraft. Progression to freefall is possible on later jumps. All parachutes used by Skydive Academy are of the Ram Air design & all reserves are fitted with automatic activation devices. Round parachutes are no longer used by us.

The SL Course requires a minimum of 6 hours instruction. Courses normally last a full day allowing for coffee, lunch & tea breaks and normally take place on the 1st Saturdays of each month, although other dates can be arranged for group bookings, with the jump normally taking place the next day weather permitting. Occasionally during the lighter summer evenings jumps may be undertaken on the day of the course. Courses can be run on other days for groups of 5 or more if arranged in advance.

Once trained, given suitable conditions and providing they remain in date with their training, Solo Student Category System Parachutists can undertake jumps on any opening day; generally weekend days from the 3rd weekend of January to the 3rd weekend of December, and during British summer Time on public holidays and several other mid week days as detailed on the booking calendars. Prior to jumping on any day student parachutists must attend daily revision training during which their ability to undertake drills and actions will be assessed - this is generally run at 09:30am on Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holiday Mondays & each day during a progression week and at 1:30pm on Wednesdays & Fridays

Participants must meet the criteria outlined in BPA Form 114 A - Solo. Purchasers should note whilst this product may be transferrable up until commencement of the course it is non-refundable; once training has been commenced the activity is non transferable as well as non refundable.

Participants need to be 16 years older and above, 16 & 17 year olds need parental/guardian consent on BPA Form 106

Reschedule options

It is possible to reschedule individual bookings upto 10 days in advance of booked dates without penalty or charge, however if it is wished to reschedule within a period of 10 days in advance of booking a reschedule fee of £35 per person will apply. Group bookings need to give us 1 months notice or loose their group discount should they wish to reschedule within 1 month of the originally booked date.

If it is not possible to jump on the day of the event due to adverse conditions there is no charge to reschedule to another date. However you must be prepared to wait until we announce that jumps are cancelled for the day; if you wish to leave before we cancel jumping there will be a £35 charge to rebook to another date.

A "No show" would result in the loss of the deposit - normally £70, and the consequent loss of any applicable group discount that could result from the reduced numbers attending.

Should participants exceed a period of 3 months since last attending to jump, or should participants demonstrate a major lack of competence at any stage after completing their initial training, they will need to retake the full training syllabus again, normally by booking onto and attending another scheduled course with suitable availability.
